This idyllic Fishing Village, with its historical buildings, art galleries, coffee shops, restaurants and the working Harbour, has been named as “one of the 12 coolest fishing village around the world” by Forbes magazine in 2018. It is nestled beautifully between Ocean and Mountains, both of which you can explore during your stay.
Possibly a dip into one of the many tidal pools before you get a feel for the local vibe while we have coffee in the village?

Sit back and let the impressions sink in during our leisurely picnic lunch on one of the remote beaches along the coast.
Another highlight is our visit to the penguin colony. The colony provides a fascinating glimpse into the social behavior of these creatures, observing how they lovingly care for their young and communicate with one another. The conversion of a section of Cape Town harbor started in 1994 and turned it slowly into the bustling Waterfront of today. It still has the interest and charm of a working harbor, as boats come and go and ship’s are refurbished in the dry dock. Many old buildings have been restored and are still in use.
We end our city tour here for lunch, some shopping or to sit down and watch the colorful people of Cape Town walk by.

The rest of the day we spend visiting the village of Hermanus, walking along the cliff path or stretching our legs along Grotto Beach– a stone throw way from our accommodation for tonight.
Let us end the day with a lovely sun-downer at Mosselberg on Grotto before we have a traditional Braai together.

Today leads us deeper into the part of which Africa is world famous for! Gondwana Game Reserve is an easy 3.5 hour drive away from our starting point this morning, and once there, it will feel like entering a completely different world.
While enjoying lunch at the Lodge, you might already spot one of the many animals roaming free in the reserve. After High Tea at the main Lodge, an experienced and knowledgeable ranger will take us on our first Safari. We will look out for game wildlife – elephant, giraffe, zebra, rhino, lion and other wildlife.
No one can explain to you the incredible feeling one has when driving in an open vehicle, through the vast land of Africa while witnessing wild animal’s behavior in their natural habitat. It is one of those experiences you will only know how much it moves and touches you once you actually do it.

Let us explore the vastness and secret wonders of the Karoo today. The land “Karoo”, meaning “Land of thirst”, was named by the Khoi, Sans and other indigenous people of this area . Water is scarce, but if you know where to look, you will find plenty! So much that I recommend you pack your swimming costume for today.
Refreshed after our first stop we continue driving through the Meiringspoort Pass towards the charming village of Prince Albert. The Lazy Lizard is the perfect spot to let the atmosphere of Prince Albert sink in and taste their delicious homemade lemonade.
After lunch, we enter the Gateway of the magnificent Swartberg Pass. It’s here, where you step out the car and wonder through the silent space of time, between the folds of mountains, formed 330 million years ago, and rocks covered in luminous green lichen.
This historical pass is an engineering feat and work of art, build in 1882, by the famous road builder Thomas Bain. Over 90% of the road is still original and has been declared a national Monument. The summit of this Pass takes us to 1585 meters above sea level, before we take a slow descent toward Oudtshoorn and our home in the Karoo – De Denne Country Guesthouse.

In the hours of the afternoon, we leave the Karoo behind to welcome the Land of the Fruit & Wine, The Breederiver Valley.
